England v West Indies, ODI, Cardiff, 01/06/2025

A Joe Root masterclass secured victory for England and an unassailable 2-0 lead in their 3-match 50 over series against the West Indies.

On a bright, breezy morning at Glamorgan's HQ, England won the toss and elected to bowl firstly, much to the initial disappointment of those expecting meek resistance from a West Indies side which is a shadow of those of the 70s and 80s glory days.

In fairness, and helped by a sloppy England fielding display (4 dropped catches), the visitors posted 308 all out, the highlight of which was a fine 103 from Keacy Carty (on you tube here).

That said, from the position they were in, 350 should have been the minimum expectation, instead the last 6 wickets fell for just 50 runs in less than 5 overs.

In reply, England were soon in trouble at 2 for 2, but that was of little concern to the magnificent Joe Root (above) as he took control of the situation despite losing partners at the other end. At one stage England were 133 for 5.

An excellent sixth wicket partnership of 143 with Will Jacks broke the back of the total, with the imperious Root striking the winning runs and ending on 166 not out, his highest ODI score.
